Morgan Spurlock, 'Super Size Me' Director, Dies at 53

Morgan Spurlock, an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker best known for his 2004 film "Super Size Me," has died at the age of 53.

Spurlock died Thursday in upstate New York due to liver failure, according to a statement from his wife Alexandra Jamieson.

Spurlock's death was confirmed by his publicist, Leslee Dart, who said in a statement that the filmmaker died of natural causes in New York City with Jamieson by his side.

"Morgan Spurlock was a visionary filmmaker who always sought to challenge the status quo. He was a pioneer in the field of documentary filmmaking and his work has had a profound impact on our society," Dart said.

Spurlock's most famous film, "Super Size Me," documented the effects of eating nothing but McDonald's food for 30 days. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning the Special Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and grossing over $11 million worldwide.

In addition to "Super Size Me," Spurlock also directed the documentaries "The Greatest Movie Ever Sold," "POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold," and "Where to Invade Next." He also hosted the CNN series "Morgan Spurlock Inside Man" and the Pivot TV series "The Great Debate."

Spurlock is survived by his wife and four children.
